US extends ADA web accessibility deadlines by a year

The US Department of Justice has given state and local governments extra time to meet the ADA Title II digital accessibility rule.

  • An interim final rule effective 20 April 2026 moves the compliance date for larger state and local governments (population 50,000+) from 24 April 2026 to 26 April 2027.
  • Smaller entities and special districts shift from 26 April 2027 to 26 April 2028.
  • The technical standard is unchanged: WCAG 2.1 Level AA for web content and mobile apps.

Why it matters: More runway, but the standard and the obligation remain — and the extension does not cover every related deadline, so agencies shouldn’t down tools.
