Apple’s 2026 accessibility features lean on on-device AI

Ahead of Global Accessibility Awareness Day, Apple previewed a wave of accessibility updates powered by Apple Intelligence. VoiceOver can now use the camera to describe a user’s surroundings or a scanned document and answer questions about what is in view. Voice Control shifts to natural language — “tap the purple folder” instead of memorised commands. Accessibility Reader handles more complex layouts and adds built-in translation, and Apple Vision Pro users can control compatible wheelchairs with their eyes. Name Recognition, which alerts deaf and hard-of-hearing users when their name is spoken, expands to more than 50 languages. Most features run on-device.

Why it matters: These ship to hundreds of millions of devices, putting capable assistive tools into mainstream hardware at no extra cost.
