Brain-computer interfaces let people with paralysis type and speak

New research reports meaningful progress for implantable brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). In a study published in Nature Medicine, a man with severe paralysis used a BCI at home for nearly two years — with no researchers present — to communicate and control a computer, sustaining relationships with family and friends and staying in full-time work. A separate BrainGate result describes a typing neuroprosthesis that uses a familiar QWERTY layout and attempted finger movements, tested in participants with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and a cervical spinal cord injury. Together they point toward reliable, everyday communication for people who cannot speak or move.

Why it matters: BCIs are edging from lab demonstrations toward durable, independent daily use — a potential lifeline for people who are locked-in or severely paralysed.
