Results from the first clinical trial of Australia’s second-generation bionic eye show substantial gains in functional vision, daily activities and quality of life for four participants who were completely blind from retinitis pigmentosa. The implant proved durable — 97% of its electrodes were still working 2.7 years after surgery, with no complications reported. The device has been granted FDA Breakthrough Device designation, putting it on a faster path toward potential availability.
